David Swann

A self-taught artist\photographer\writer living and working in Atlanta, Georgia (and Pari, Italy), David's work has been shown throughout the United States and several foreign countries. His unique conceptual art pieces and photo-illustrations have appeared in magazines, ads, brochures and other publications worldwide; and his fine art works-on-paper and mixed media works are in several private collections.

David's photographs have been juried into various national exhibitions by such renowned jurists as Jane Jackson, curator of the Sir Elton John Photography Collection; Julian Cox, curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta: Fay Gold (Fay Gold Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia), and Stephen Wirtz of the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco. And in 1985, David was the first photographer to have work accepted into the prestigious Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, France, since the group's inception in 1887. His aprés du bord was prominently displayed in the Grand Palais for the duration of the salon.

David holds an under-graduate degree from John Carroll University, a post-graduate degree from Lehigh University, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

David accepts private commissions through the Catherine Kelleghan Gallery.

Artist Statement

For me art, even representative art, is more than a static record of reality, it is documenting reality in the context of a much larger ''vision''— almost, as it were an abstraction—it's revealing a world of promise and yes, sometimes even compromise.

As you will see, many of my works deal with what I like to call 'other realities,' but occasionally I explore the world right outside our collective windows only to discover that nature often foretells of other eventualities. On the one hand it is reassuring to learn how much we all truly have in common as a ''family of man'' and how much we all seem to be energized by the allure of promise; on the other hand, it is sometimes surprising to discover how little we know about the ultimate cost of compromise. We all have, so to speak, our 'gathering storms'—(inspiration for a work I completed in early 2007).

Recently I revisited an earlier exercise —experimenting with different methods of faithfully rendering previous constructed images on a myriad of pervious surfaces, including wood, synthetic materials, raw canvases and even handmade papers.

One of the things I found exciting about this adventure is that it comfortably brings together age-old processes (i.e., that of making paper) and today's technology. And, in doing so, dispels one of the dire predictions of Dadaism: that the industrial age and its encroaching technologies would render art meaningless and rob us of our spirituality.

It is my belief that if anything, digital technology is just another contemporary tool at the artists' disposal, and in the hands of caring custodians it allows us the freedom to more fully explore our inner voices and gives us another means by which to preserve and ultimately share our discoveries with larger audiences and future generations.
